In a significant show of solidarity, hundreds of Manipur police commandos from four different districts took part in an arms-down protest on Wednesday. This demonstration was a symbolic gesture condemning the recent abduction and assault on an additional Superintendent of Police (SP), as well as the indiscriminate firing by unidentified gunmen at the officer’s residence in Imphal the previous evening.
Commandos representing Imphal West, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts participated in the protest, calling upon authorities to take decisive action against the perpetrators. Senior police officers engaged in discussions with the protesters at their respective bases, seeking resolutions to address the concerns raised.
According to a senior police officer, the incident involved approximately 200 armed assailants who stormed the residence of the additional SP of Imphal West district, Moirangthem Amit Singh. During the attack, the officer and one of his escorts were abducted by the assailants but were later rescued and admitted to Raj Medicity for medical treatment.
Following the initial attack, additional forces were swiftly deployed, leading to a crossfire situation where two civilians, Rabinash Moirangthem (24) and Kangujam Bhimsen (20), sustained gunshot wounds. Police confirmed that a case has been registered, and investigations are underway to apprehend the culprits responsible for the violence.
