Mumbai’s journey to the final of the Ranji Trophy gained momentum with a dominant performance against Tamil Nadu, clinching victory by an innings and 70 runs at the MCA Cricket Ground. Shardul Thakur’s remarkable century with the bat and potent bowling display from Shams Mulani propelled Mumbai to their 48th Ranji Trophy final.
Once again, Tamil Nadu’s batting lineup faltered against the formidable Mumbai side led by Ajinkya Rahane. Despite efforts from Baba Indrajith, who scored 70 runs, the rest of the Tamil Nadu batters struggled to make an impact, failing to capitalize on decent starts.
Shardul Thakur led the bowling attack for Mumbai, well-supported by left-arm spinner Shams Mulani, who played a pivotal role in restricting Tamil Nadu to a modest total of 162 runs. Thakur’s figures of 2/16 and Mulani’s four-wicket haul ensured Mumbai’s dominance on the field.
In the first innings, Mumbai managed to restrict Tamil Nadu to a mere 146 runs. Thakur’s maiden Test century turned the tide in Mumbai’s favor after they found themselves struggling at 106/7. His aggressive batting, along with contributions from Hardik Tamore, helped Mumbai stage a remarkable comeback.
Thakur’s century, scored off just 90 balls, showcased his attacking prowess as he dismantled Tamil Nadu’s bowling attack, particularly targeting spinner S Ajith Ram. His partnership with Tamore for the eighth wicket added crucial runs to Mumbai’s total.
Despite the efforts of Tamil Nadu’s skipper R Sai Kishore, who claimed six wickets in the innings, Mumbai’s lower order, led by Thakur’s heroics and Tanush Kotian’s quickfire 89*, propelled Mumbai to a commanding total of 378 runs.
The stellar performance with both bat and ball secured Mumbai’s place in the Ranji Trophy final, underscoring their dominance in the tournament. With Thakur leading from the front and the team firing on all cylinders, Mumbai emerges as a formidable contender for the prestigious title.
