Today in court | Big jolt to Mamata govt by SC | Former MP Dhananjay Singh sentenced to 7 years
The Mamata government faced a huge setback from the Supreme Court on Wednesday as it sought to challenge the CBI investigation in the Sandeshkhali and Shahjahanshekh cases. The Court, however, declined an immediate hearing, stating that the Chief Justice of India would determine the timing. The West Bengal government had urged a prompt hearing against the High Court's decision to transfer Shahjahan Sheikh to the CBI. Mamata's administration argued in the Supreme Court that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was diligently handling the case, and handing it over to the CBI was unjust. Following the Calcutta High Court's order to transfer Shahjahan Sheikh's custody and relevant documents in the Sandeshkhali case, a CBI team, accompanied by Central Armed Forces, arrived at the CID office in Bhawani Bhawan, Kolkata, on Wednesday at 4:15 pm. The Calcutta High Court had previously issued a contempt notice to CID, instructing the final transfer of Shahjahan Sheikh to the CBI.
