Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay is likely to visit Bharat from March 15-16, marking his inaugural official overseas trip his since re-election.
He assumed the position of Prime Minister for the second time on January 28. During his visit, he aims to engage with Bharatiya officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and discussing an economic stimulus plan aimed at rejuvenating Bhutan’s economy.
Tobgay’s visit is of particular significance against the backdrop of Bhutan’s economic challenges and the geopolitical dynamics involving China.
The discussions in Bharat will likely cover a range of bilateral and regional issues, including the mobilisation and allocation of the economic stimulus funds. Bharat, as Bhutan’s primary development partner, plays a significant role in Bhutan’s socio-economic development, contributing significantly to its Five-Year Plans and supporting over 600 projects in the country.
Under Tobgay’s leadership , the Bhutanese government has recently launched a Rs 1.5-billion economic stimulus package, supported by Bharat, to address the country’s economic slowdown and bolster many sectors, including tourism, technology and small businneses. Thea announcement was made by Prime Minister Tobgay on February 29 in Thimphu.
