In a devastating turn of events, at least 14 children were electrocuted during a ‘Shiv Baraat’ procession in Kota, Rajasthan, today, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri. The incident occurred as the procession, filled with devotees from the Kaali Basti area, was making its way through the streets. The children, part of the gathering, were carrying Kalash, a ceremonial pot, when a tragic accident unfolded.
According to Kota Superintendent of Police, Amrita Duhan, the accident took place when a child carrying a pipe approximately 20-22 feet in length inadvertently came into contact with a high-tension wire. In a brave attempt to rescue the child from the dangerous situation, the other children present rushed to help, only to be met with a fatal outcome. The immediate priority has been to provide proper medical treatment to the injured children, with some being admitted to MBS Hospital in Kota and arrangements made for possible referral to Jaipur for further care, if necessary.
Expressing profound sorrow over the incident, Lok Sabha Speaker and Member of Parliament from Kota, Om Birla, conveyed his condolences and instructed medical personnel to ensure the injured children receive the best possible care. BJP MP Birla’s directives underscored the urgency of the situation and the need for swift action to address the medical needs of the affected children.
Among those injured, two children are reported to be in a critical condition, with one suffering from 100% burns. Rajasthan Minister Heeralal Nagar, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, confirmed that a specialized medical team has been mobilized to provide comprehensive treatment to the victims. Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine if any negligence contributed to the tragic incident.
