Bengal’s ruling government Trinamool Congress (TMC) has always been in the headlines for its controversial statements and activities. In a recent, Mamta Banerjee made false allegations that people who are coming to Bengal are outsiders and BJP is anti-Bengal.
On Sunday, TMC announced that Yusuf Pathan who is from Gujarat and Kirti Azad who is from Burdwan will contest the Lok Sabha elections.
In a major twist in Bengal politics, former Bharatiya cricketer Yusuf Pathan joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and will contest the Lok Sabha polls from the Berhampore seat in Murshidabad district.
On Sunday, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee announced Pathan’s candidature to grab the seat from the Congress, which was under Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury since 1999.
According to the media sources, recently the party approached Pathan to offer him a ticket because it was looking for a minority face for Berhampore, where 52 % of the voters are minorities.
Notably, Pathan hails from Gujarat and he wasn’t the only surprise in the list of 42 candidates announced by the TMC.
Kirti Azad, another former cricketer was also fielded by the TMC from the Burdwan-Durgapur Lok Sabha constituency. In November 2021, Kirti Azad had formally joined the TMC.
After the announcements of the candidates, West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar questioned the TMC’s decision to field Yusuf Pathan and Kirti Azad.
Shocking that Mamata Banerjee has given ticket to Kirti Azad, son of Bhagwat Jha Azad, whose close aides abducted a Bengali Hindu girl from her home in Bhagalpur, triggering the tragic exodus of 50,000 Bengalis, who had lived there for generations.

Majumdar said, ‘Just half an hour before the TMC’s list was announced, Abhishek Banerjee was making statements like BJP is anti-Bengal. Now, when the candidates are announced, it’s clear that TMS is bringing people from outside. I do not know if Kirti Azad and Yusuf Pathan are Bengali, Yusuf Pathan is from Gujarat, and so is PM Modi, but for them, PM Modi is an outsider’.
Amit Malviya, national convener of the IT cell of BJP tweeted on X, ‘Shocking that Mamata Banerjee has given ticket to Kirti Azad, son of Bhagwat Jha Azad, whose close aides abducted a Bengali Hindu girl from her home in Bhagalpur, triggering the tragic exodus of 50,000 Bengalis, who had lived there for generations. Papri Bose-Roy was abducted by close political associates and henchmen of Kirti Azad’s father Bhagwat Jha Azad, in his constituency Bhagalpur. Bhagwat Jha was the Chief Minister then but did nothing to help find the Bengali girl. On the contrary he protected and helped the girl’s abductors and tormentors of Bengali Hindus to flee. The curse of Bengalis wiped out the Azad clan from Bihar’s politics, till Mamata Banerjee decided to field their tormentor’s son from Bardhaman-Durgapur. Shame on her. This is so like protecting Sheikh Shahjahan, the tormentor of Hindus in #Sandeshkhali.’
