This Day in The History | Veer Sambhaji Maharaj Death Anniversary | Ritam English
March 11, 1689, marks the sacrifice of the valiant Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. On this day, in Koregaon by the banks of the Bhima River, he breathed his last. Sambhaji Maharaj, the rightful successor of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, displayed immense valor during a challenging period of Mughal aggression led by Aurangzeb. Surrounded by adversaries, including his own kin providing information to Aurangzeb, Sambhaji faced a relentless assault. Despite Aurangzeb's attempts to coerce him into changing his faith, Sambhaji steadfastly refused. Eventually captured and subjected to brutal torture, Sambhaji Maharaj, on March 11, 1689, embraced martyrdom, upholding Hinduism and the Maratha empire, refusing to bow before Aurangzeb.
