China's Surveillance Move: Research Vessel Watches Agni-5 Test, Bharat's Technological Advancements Shine

In a recent development, China dispatched its second research vessel, ‘Xiang Yang Hong 01,’ to the Indian shores just before Bharat’s critical flight-test of the Agni-5 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The Agni-5, with a range of 5,000 km, is believed to have the capability to target a significant part of China. The Chinese ship is positioned less than 260 nautical miles off the coast of Visakhapatnam, close to the base of India’s nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines.

Observing Missile Test and Gathering Data

Experts speculate that China’s research vessel is positioned to monitor and collect data during Bharat’s missile test. Despite China claiming these ships are for research purposes only, concerns persist that they might be gathering sensitive information about rivals’ naval assets in the Indian Ocean Region, especially related to submarine operations. This follows a pattern observed in previous missile tests where Chinese vessels entered the Indian Ocean Region just ahead of planned tests.

NOTAM Issued and Alleged Espionage

Bharat issued a Notice To Air Mission (NOTAM) on March 7, a mandatory warning before missile or rocket tests, spanning 3,550 km over the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean Region. The alleged ‘spy’ ship is presumed to have closely observed the missile test, calculating data on its range and capability. Some Chinese experts argue that Bharat’s Agni-V may have a range exceeding 5,000 km, reaching up to 8,000 km, according to statements made in 2012.

Chinese Presence in Maldives Raises Concerns

Another Chinese research vessel, Xiang Yang Hong 03, has been causing concerns for Indian naval forces by roaming in Maldives waters. Pro-China President Mohamed Muizzu has granted permission for Chinese research vessels to dock at Male, exacerbating worries about China’s increasing presence in the region. Reports indicate that a significant portion of China’s civilian research vessels may be linked to military objectives, posing potential risks in the strategic landscape.

In conclusion, the deployment of Chinese research vessels near Indian shores ahead of missile tests raises questions about their true intentions and potential espionage activities, adding complexity to the geopolitical dynamics in the region.
