In a significant political development, Nayab Singh Saini is set to become the new Chief Minister of Haryana, replacing Manohar Lal Khattar. Saini, a Member of Parliament representing Kurukshetra and a prominent figure from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community, is scheduled to take oath as the chief minister at 5 pm on Tuesday evening.
The announcement was made by BJP MLA Kishan Lal Middha, who informed reporters that Saini’s appointment as the next CM of Haryana was imminent. Saini had been serving as the state president of Haryana BJP since October of the previous year, and his elevation to the chief ministerial position comes after Khattar’s resignation amid growing tensions within the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-Jannayak Janata Party (BJP-JJP) alliance.
The cracks within the alliance had been evident following the breakdown of seat-sharing discussions for the Lok Sabha elections. Khattar’s cabinet, comprising 14 ministers including the CM and three members from the Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala-led JJP, has collectively resigned in light of the developments.
Presently, the BJP holds 41 seats in the 90-member assembly, while the JJP has 10. Additionally, the ruling coalition enjoys the support of six out of seven independent members. On the opposition front, the Congress holds 30 seats, with the Indian National Lok Dal and Haryana Lokhit Party each having one seat. Notably, the BJP had secured victories in all 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana during the 2019 elections.
Reacting to Khattar’s resignation, Congress MP Deepender Hooda highlighted public discontent with the existing government in the state, emphasizing the desire for change. He stated, “All that is happening in Haryana is because the public has decided to bring change. The public was upset with the present government in the state. We are keeping a close eye on the developments.”
The transition in leadership in Haryana signifies a pivotal moment in the state’s political landscape, with Nayab Singh Saini poised to assume the mantle of leadership amidst shifting alliances and public expectations for change. As he prepares to take office, all eyes are on Saini’s vision and agenda for addressing the challenges and aspirations of the people of Haryana.
