In preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024, Uttarakhand has taken significant steps to ensure the smooth conduct of the electoral process. With 11,500 booths set up across the state, authorities are keen on addressing security concerns effectively. Out of these booths, 1,500 have been identified as hypersensitive, warranting special attention.
To tackle security challenges, additional paramilitary forces have been requested. According to reports from the Police Headquarters, there’s a demand for 15 percent more paramilitary forces from the Center. Out of the requested 115 companies, 20 have already been allotted to the state in the initial phase. This allocation prioritizes areas with heightened security needs, such as Udham Singh Nagar, Haridwar, Dehradun, and Nainital districts.
A comprehensive security plan includes the deployment of not only paramilitary forces but also personnel from the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), Home Guards, and local police. The distribution of forces aims to ensure adequate coverage across all districts, with a focus on sensitive areas.
Recently, a team from the Election Commission of India visited Guwahati, Assam, to review election preparedness. Meetings were held with officials and political parties to assess security arrangements. Additionally, a briefing was organized for observers who will be deployed in various states and union territories.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar emphasized the critical role of observers in ensuring fair and transparent elections. They are tasked with maintaining a level playing field, free from intimidation or inducement. Kumar stressed the importance of professionalism and accessibility, urging observers to engage with all stakeholders, including candidates.
With the Lok Sabha elections scheduled between April and May this year, the focus remains on ensuring the integrity of the electoral process. The concerted efforts of authorities, supported by adequate security measures, aim to facilitate a smooth and democratic voting experience for the people of Uttarakhand.
