On Wednesday, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Cabinet cleared the proposal to rename Ahmednagar as Ahilya Nagar.
The Cabinet has also decided to rename 8 Mumbai railway station names which were British Era names. The cabinet has also approved to construction of a sea link between Uttan (Bhayander) and Virar (Palghar).
The Cabinet has further approved the purchase of 2.5 acres of land in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir to construct a Maharashtra Bhavan there.
In the state budget in the previous budget session, the budget proposal for the same was already done.
The demand for renaming Ahmednagar was championed by BJP leader and MLC Gopichand Padalkar, representing the influential Dhangar community. Ahilyabai Holkar holds a special place in the hearts of the Dhanar community, as both she and her father-in-law, Malharrao Holkar, hailed from this shepherd community.
Ahmednagar, founded by Ahmad Nizam Shah in 1494, later became the capital of the independent Sultanate of Ahmednagar. Aurangabad, established by Aurangzeb in the 1650s, and Osmanabad, named after Mir Osman Ali Khan, have also undergone name changes as part of this trend.
