Four individuals, including three Bharatiya nationals, were apprehended by authorities near the Canada-US border in upstate New York. The arrests occurred as they attempted to enter the United States illegally by jumping off a moving freight train on the International Railroad Bridge in Buffalo. Among them was a woman who sustained an injury during the attempt. The fourth individual was identified as a man from the Dominican Republic. They were arrested following a foot pursuit after leaving the injured woman behind.
Medical Assistance and Investigation: Upon their arrest, the injured woman received immediate medical attention from Erie County Sheriff’s deputies and US Customs and Border Protection officers. She was subsequently transported to a local medical center for further treatment. An investigation revealed that all four individuals were undocumented non-citizens.
The three men, along with the woman after her medical treatment, are undergoing legal processing. They are detained at the Batavia Federal Detention Facility awaiting deportation hearings. Charges have been filed against them under Sections 212 and 237 of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
According to reports, there has been a significant increase in encounters at the northern border, with 191,603 recorded crossings in 2023, marking a 41% rise from the previous year. Tragically, attempts to cross often result in perilous situations, with migrants facing hypothermia and other dangers. In the past two months alone, a dozen migrants lost their lives attempting the crossing. Last year saw a substantial increase in apprehensions, with more than 12,200 individuals arrested crossing illegally from Canada, a 241% surge from the preceding year. Most of these migrants, including Mexicans, exploit the visa-free travel to Canada before attempting to enter the US illegally.
The issue of migration has become a contentious topic between Republicans and Democrats, especially with the upcoming presidential elections. The surge in border crossings has intensified discussions on immigration policies and border security measures.

Investigations into this case have led to the arrest of an Bharatiya-origin man in Chicago, suspected of involvement in a human smuggling conspiracy. Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel, also known as ‘Dirty Harry’, has been charged with transportation of illegal aliens and conspiracy-related offenses.
