Today in Delhi, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, who served as India’s envoy to the United States, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as part of his new journey into politics. Hailing from Amritsar, Punjab, Sandhu’s entry into BJP was marked by a ceremony attended by BJP National Secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Tarun Chug.
In his statement during the joining ceremony, Sandhu expressed admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development-oriented leadership. He emphasized the need for development to reach his hometown, Amritsar. Sandhu highlighted his decade-long experience working closely with PM Modi, particularly in strengthening ties with the United States and Sri Lanka.
Sandhu stressed the significance of Amritsar not missing out on national opportunities, advocating for its development in line with the progress witnessed in other parts of the country. Regarding his potential candidacy for the Lok Sabha elections, Sandhu indicated that the decision rests with the party leadership.
Having concluded his tenure as India’s envoy to the US on February 1, Sandhu played a pivotal role in enhancing bilateral relations, notably during then-President Donald Trump’s visit to India. With extensive experience in diplomatic roles, including serving as Deputy Chief of Mission in Washington, DC, Sandhu brings a wealth of expertise to his new political endeavor.
The upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Punjab, scheduled for June 1, 2024, have seen both the BJP and Congress withholding candidate announcements for several seats. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has already named candidates, including members of Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann’s cabinet, for eight constituencies.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP secured two seats in Punjab, garnering a 9.7% vote share, while Congress emerged victorious in eight constituencies with a 40.6% vote share. Additionally, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and AAP each won one seat. The electoral battle for Punjab’s 13 parliamentary seats is expected to intensify as the election dates draw nearer.
As the election season unfolds, anticipation mounts among political observers and citizens alike. With the Lok Sabha elections spanning from April 19 to June 1, 2024, and vote counting slated for June 4, all eyes are on the evolving political landscape and the prospects of candidates vying for representation in the Bharatiya Parliament.
