Unsafe Campuses: Plagued by Sexual Harassment, Muslim Universities Fail Female Students

FacebookTwitterWhatsAppTelegram

In a distressing series of events, seven incidents of sexual harassment have rocked various Muslim universities across Bharat, shedding light on the alarming safety concerns faced by female students. These incidents, ranging from inappropriate advances to outright assault, paint a grim picture of the academic environments where students are supposed to feel secure and nurtured.

Baba Saheb Ambedkar University’s Shocking Ordeal:

The ordeal at Baba Saheb Ambedkar University in Delhi’s Rohini sent shockwaves as 13 female students bravely came forward with allegations against assistant professor Salim Sheikh. The accounts detailed instances of harassment during examinations, with Sheikh exploiting his position of authority to subject students to unwanted advances and lewd behavior. Despite complaints, the university’s response was lackluster, failing to provide the necessary support to the victims.

Central University of Kerala: A Professor’s Lewd Classes and Misconduct:

Assistant professor Efthikar Ahamed B of the Central University of Kerala faced charges of sexual harassment after MA English students accused him of misconduct during classes and examinations. Ahamed’s alleged actions, including inappropriate touching and advances, shed light on the vulnerability of students within educational institutions.

Aligarh Muslim University’s Troubling Incidents:

Aligarh Muslim University witnessed multiple incidents of sexual harassment, with both faculty members and students implicated. From a research scholar’s accusations against her professor to a reader in the Department of Sanskrit making lewd passes at a post-graduate student, these incidents underscore the pervasive nature of the problem within the institution.

Madurai Medical College’s Shocking Revelations:

At Madurai Medical College, assistant professor Syed Tahir Hussain faced suspension following allegations of sexual harassment by 23 women associated with the college. The accusations ranged from inappropriate remarks to outright molestation, highlighting a systemic failure to address misconduct within the medical education system.

Jamia Millia Islamia’s Disturbing Suspension:

An assistant professor from Jamia Millia Islamia’s Department of Psychology faced suspension following allegations of sexual harassment and assault against fellow faculty members. The incident, involving aggressive behavior and attempted assault, raises questions about the university’s ability to ensure a safe working environment for its staff and students.

Justice Prevails in Aligarh:

In a significant development, Aligarh’s additional district judge overturned the acquittal of a management department professor accused of sexual remarks and unwelcome advances towards an Iranian research scholar. The verdict highlights the importance of holding perpetrators accountable and seeking justice for victims, irrespective of their nationality.

These distressing incidents underscore the urgent need for Muslim universities to address the pervasive issue of sexual harassment within their campuses. The safety and well-being of female students must be prioritized, with robust mechanisms in place to prevent and respond to such misconduct. Failure to do so not only jeopardizes the academic journey of students but also erodes the trust and credibility of educational institutions. It is imperative for authorities to take decisive action to create safer learning environments for all students, free from the fear of harassment and abuse.
