In a significant breakthrough, the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police has apprehended Haris Farooqi, also known as Harish Ajmal Faruqi, the alleged head of ISIS in India, and one of his associates. This arrest comes following their illegal entry into Assam’s Dhubri from neighboring Bangladesh. Both individuals were on the National Investigation Agency’s most wanted list.
According to STF sources, agencies received intelligence indicating that two ISIS members operating in India were planning to cross over into the country via the Dhubri Sector to carry out sabotage activities. Acting swiftly on this information, a team led by Inspector General of Police Parthasarathi Mahanta launched a major operation to capture the duo.
The operation culminated in the successful arrest of Farooqi and his associate, Rehan, in the Dharmasala area of Dhubri early this morning. The duo allegedly played a significant role in advancing ISIS’s agenda in India, including recruitment, terror funding, and planning terror acts using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in various parts of the country.
According to a statement by police officials, Farooqi and Rehan are facing multiple pending cases at the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Delhi, as well as with Anti-Terrorism Squads (ATS) in Lucknow and other locations. The STF, Assam, has announced its intention to hand over the accused to the NIA for further legal proceedings.
This arrest marks a significant milestone in counter-terrorism efforts, underscoring the commitment of law enforcement agencies to dismantle terrorist networks and safeguard national security.
