India has formally protested against remarks made by the Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy, George Enzweiler, regarding the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi liquor policy case. Sources within the Ministry of External Affairs have labeled the envoy’s comments as “blatant interference in India’s internal matters.”
In response to the envoy’s comments, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned George Enzweiler today to lodge an official protest. Enzweiler was observed leaving the Ministry of External Affairs office located in the South Block of the national capital this morning.
The protest follows statements from the German Foreign Ministry, expressing expectations for Kejriwal to receive a fair and impartial trial, given India’s democratic credentials. The spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry emphasized that the presumption of innocence is fundamental and must be upheld in Kejriwal’s case.
Arvind Kejriwal, a prominent leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was arrested in connection with the Delhi liquor policy scam. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has accused him of being a conspirator in a case related to the 2021-22 Delhi liquor policy, which allegedly facilitated exorbitant profit margins for retailers and wholesalers.
A local court has remanded Kejriwal in ED custody until March 28, citing the need for detailed interrogation regarding his involvement in the alleged scam. The investigation has focused on an alleged network of middlemen, businessmen, and politicians, referred to by central agencies as the “South Group.”
