The Carnatic music industry finds itself embroiled in a political storm as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin extends his support to the controversial vocalist TM Krishna. This comes amidst a heated debate surrounding Krishna’s selection for the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi award, which has led to protests from several artists within the Carnatic music community.
Renowned musicians, including sister duo Ranjani and Gayatri, have voiced strong opposition to conferring the award upon Krishna, accusing him of glorifying Periyar, a controversial figure, and vilifying the Carnatic music tradition. Their dissent has prompted the withdrawal of multiple artists from the upcoming music academic conference scheduled to be held later this year.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Chief Minister Stalin congratulated TM Krishna on his selection for the Sangita Kalanidhi award. He defended Krishna’s progressive political stances and emphasized the importance of respecting individuals who advocate for social equality and justice. Stalin also praised the Music Academy for recognizing Krishna’s contributions to the music industry and urged against mixing narrow politics with music.

Kanimozhi, a prominent leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, echoed Stalin’s sentiments by expressing support for TM Krishna. She condemned the backlash directed at Krishna for his social beliefs and engagement with Periyar, labeling it as unjustified hate.
The controversy stems from Krishna’s outspoken advocacy for social causes alongside his musical endeavors. Born into a family with deep roots in Carnatic music, Krishna has gained acclaim for his vocal talent while also using his platform to address issues such as caste discrimination, gender equality, and the democratization of the arts.
However, his alignment with Periyarite ideology and criticism of certain communities, notably Brahmins, has sparked controversy within the Carnatic music community. Critics argue that Krishna’s statements and actions undermine the traditional values and heritage of Carnatic music, leading to divisions within the industry.
Despite the backlash, the Madras Music Academy stands by its decision to honor TM Krishna with the Sangita Kalanidhi award. According to a press release from the Academy, Krishna will preside over the academic sessions of the 98th Annual Conference and Concerts, scheduled to take place between December 15, 2024, and January 1, 2025.
The controversy surrounding TM Krishna’s selection for the Sangita Kalanidhi award underscores the intersection of art, politics, and social activism within the Carnatic music industry. As debates continue to rage, the future of the prestigious award and the unity of the music community remain uncertain.
