“Attention, a question for the White House: Are you sure it was ISIS? Won’t you change your mind later?” remarked Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, in an article published by the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper. She directly challenged the White House’s certainty regarding ISIS’s involvement in the tragic attack at Crocus City Hall in Moscow on March 23, which claimed 133 lives and left hundreds injured.
Zakharova underscored the historical context of US interventions in Middle Eastern affairs, stating, “What is the logic, you may ask? Money and power. And, considering the international legal ban on direct interventions, it is also about sowing a ‘controlled chaos’ and reshaping world order by the hands of terrorists.” She suggested that the US may be leveraging the mention of the terrorist organization to support Ukraine and its President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The Islamic State’s news agency, Amaq, claimed responsibility for the attack on Telegram and subsequently released a photo and bodycam footage purportedly depicting the four gunmen responsible for the bloodshed at Crocus City Hall. The assault, orchestrated by the Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K), an affiliate primarily active in Afghanistan, occurred just before the scheduled performance by the Soviet-era rock band ‘Picnic.’
As investigations continue, questions surrounding the veracity of ISIS’s involvement persist, with broader implications for regional and global security under scrutiny.
