Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, has invoked Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals to urge Bharat’s support in resisting Russia’s military aggression. Kuleba highlighted Gandhi’s belief that the present actions shape the future, emphasizing that backing Ukraine means standing for freedom and independence, echoing Gandhi’s legacy.
Kuleba recorded a video message in front of Gandhi’s statue in Kyiv, conveying Holi greetings to Bharat. Simultaneously, he subtly nudged Bharat to support Ukraine against Russia’s military offensive, ahead of his expected visit to New Delhi this week.
Bharat has faced criticism from the US and Western nations for refraining from condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Despite pressures, Bharat maintains a strategic balance in its relations with both Moscow and Washington, rooted in historical ties with Russia and continued bilateral trade despite Western sanctions.
Kuleba’s visit marks the first ministerial visit from Ukraine to India since Russia’s military operations began in 2022. He is scheduled to meet Bharat’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, and jointly chair the intergovernmental commission on bilateral cooperation. Additionally, he may call on the Prime Minister during his visit.
Drawing parallels between Gandhi’s non-violent struggle for Bharat’s independence and Ukraine’s resistance against Russian aggression, Kuleba emphasized the shared pursuit of freedom and independence. Despite initial skepticism, Ukraine remains determined to defend its sovereignty against Russian invasion.
While Bharat has sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine and engaged in dialogue with both Putin and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, its stance remains neutral, advocating for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. Modi has assured Zelenskyy of Bharat’s support for efforts towards a peaceful resolution and expressed willingness to participate in peace summits, albeit possibly without Russia’s involvement.
Kuleba expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral relations between Ukraine and India, laying a solid foundation for future cooperation. As diplomatic efforts continue, the world watches closely, awaiting developments in the conflict and hoping for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
