On Tuesday, February 26, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) filed a complaint with the Election Commission against Congress leader Supriya Shrinate for a sexist social media post targeting a BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.
Led by General Secretaries Vinod Tawde and Om Pathak, a BJP delegation met with the Election Commission to officially lodge the complaint.
The BJP has staunchly defended Bollywood star Kangana Ranaut, a new entrant to politics, after she faced sexist attacks from Congress leaders and supporters on social media. Former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jai Ram Thakur declared that the BJP would even explore legal action against derogatory remarks made by Congress leaders against Kangana Ranaut.
In response to the derogatory remarks, Leader of Opposition in the state Thakur criticized the Congress leader’s actions, stating that her comments were a significant error given Mandi’s status as “choti Kashi” and its cultural significance with over 300 temples.
Additionally, Rekha Sharma, the Chief of the National Commission for Women (NCW), urged Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to take action against two party members for using derogatory language against another woman.
Kangana Ranaut, in her reaction to the offensive attacks, emphasized the importance of dignity for every woman, regardless of profession. She particularly expressed hurt over the reference to Mandi, known as “Chota Kashi” and revered for its spiritual heritage.
Earlier, on Monday, Kangana Ranaut faced a barrage of online abuse from Congress leaders and supporters following her announcement as a Lok Sabha candidate from Mandi. Congress National Spokesperson Supriya Shrinate had posted a provocative message on Instagram, which she later deleted, questioning the motives behind Kangana’s candidature using inappropriate language.
Subsequently, Supriya Shrinate issued a clarification video, attributing the post to someone with access to her account and promising accountability for the action.
