Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s (MDMK) A Ganeshamurthi, who served as the Lok Sabha MP for Erode in Tamil Nadu, has passed away at the age of 76. The news of his demise was confirmed by ANI, citing cardiac arrest as the cause.
Ganeshamurthi had been admitted to a hospital in Erode on March 24 after allegedly attempting to end his life by consuming pesticide. Despite medical intervention, his condition remained critical. He was subsequently transferred to a private hospital in Coimbatore, where he breathed his last at 5.05 am.
The veteran politician, elected on a DMK ticket in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, had a long-standing career in politics. He had served as a three-time MP and held significant positions within the MDMK ranks.
According to reports, Ganeshamurthi had developed uneasiness and was initially admitted to a private hospital in Erode. He was later shifted to the ICU and put on a ventilator.
Several political figures, including state minister S Muthusamy, BJP MLA Dr C Saraswathy, and AIADMK leader K V Ramalingam, visited the hospital to inquire about Ganeshamurthi’s health during his hospitalization.
Speculations arose regarding Ganeshamurthi’s mental state due to the party’s decision not to field him as a candidate from the Erode seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. However, MDMK general secretary Vaiko refuted claims of Ganeshamurthi’s dissatisfaction with the ticket distribution, stating that Ganeshamurthi had expressed contentment with the party’s decision.
Expressing condolences, Congress leader Manickam Tagore highlighted Ganeshamurthi’s dedication to public service, citing his victories in the 2009 and 2019 elections with MDMK.
The body of A Ganeshamurthi has been sent for postmortem, and his passing has left a void in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. His contributions to the state and his commitment to public welfare will be remembered as his legacy.
