The Congress party has decided to replace Supriya Shrinate as a candidate for the upcoming elections. Shrinate, who contested from Maharajganj in Uttar Pradesh in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, faced criticism for her remarks regarding actor Kangana Ranaut, who is the BJP’s pick from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi constituency.
In the latest development, Virendra Chaudhary has been named as the Congress candidate for the Maharajganj seat, replacing Shrinate. This decision comes amidst a significant backlash over Shrinate’s comments on Kangana Ranaut.
Speaking to NDTV, Shrinate mentioned that she expressed her desire to focus on her role as the social media head within the party and requested not to be fielded in the elections. She also suggested a replacement candidate for her constituency.
The controversy sparked on Monday when an offensive post appeared on Shrinate’s Instagram account, featuring Kangana Ranaut with a derogatory caption. Shrinate clarified that multiple individuals have access to her social media handles, and one of them posted the inappropriate content without her knowledge.
Following the incident, the Election Commission issued a show-cause notice to Shrinate, seeking an explanation regarding the offensive post.
The Congress party released its eighth list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, naming contenders for Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Jharkhand. With this announcement, the total count of Congress candidates stands at 208.
In Madhya Pradesh, Rao Yadvendra Singh will challenge Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in Guna, while Pratap Bhanu Sharma will contest against former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Vidisha. Tarvar Singh Lodhi has been nominated from Damoh.
In Jharkhand, Kalicharan Munda, Sukhdeo Bhagat, and Jaiprakashbhai Patel have been named as candidates for Khunti, Lohardaga, and Hazaribagh parliamentary constituencies respectively.
For Telangana, Suguna Kumari Chelimala, Tatiparthi Jeevan Reddy, Neelam Madhu, and Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy have been selected to contest from Adilabad, Nizamabad, Medak, and Bhongir respectively.
In Uttar Pradesh, the Congress has nominated Dolly Sharma, Nakul Dubey, Shivram Valmiki, and Virendra Chaudhary to contest from Ghaziabad, Sitapur, Bulandshahr (SC), and Maharajganj constituencies respectively.
The replacement of Supriya Shrinate as a candidate underscores the party’s efforts to address controversies and maintain a strong stance ahead of the elections.
