A gold mine in Amur region, Russia where 13 workers have been closed in for more than a week, is completely flooded, according to the media reports. On March 18, the miners working at the Pioneer mine were trapped following a rock collapse.
Notably, Pioneer is one of the biggest mines in Russia. As per the Wednesday reports, ‘the majority of rescue efforts had been suspended at the mine due to the risk of another rock collapse’.
The country’s emergencies ministry in a statement said that emergency workers would study water deposits discovered at the bottom of four shafts.
The statement added, ‘This will allow us to establish a complete picture of the entire depth of the mine and decide on further work’.
On Monday, Pioneer’s director managing director was arrested over safety violations at the mine. The identity of the managing director was not known.
A local branch of the Investigative Committee said, ‘The managing director was detained in the Amur region on suspicion of violating safety requirements during operations at the Pioneer mine’.
