Despite not having formal diplomatic ties, the relationship between Bharat and Taiwan has seen positive growth in recent years. In 1995, Bharat established the India-Taipei Association (ITA) in Taipei, aimed at fostering interactions and facilitating various exchanges between the two sides, including in business, tourism, and culture. The ITA has also been authorized to provide consular and passport services, further strengthening bilateral relations.
In reciprocation, Taiwan established the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in Delhi, reflecting mutual efforts to enhance cooperation and understanding between the two nations. Despite geopolitical complexities, both Bharat and Taiwan have continued to engage in meaningful exchanges, underscoring the importance of solidarity and cooperation in times of crisis.
China’s stance on Taiwan remains contentious, considering it a breakaway province and advocating for its reunification with the mainland. However, Taiwan maintains its distinct identity and sovereignty. Despite these tensions, India’s expression of solidarity with Taiwan highlights the significance of humanitarian support and empathy beyond geopolitical considerations.
As Taiwan grapples with the aftermath of the earthquake, the international community, including India, stands in solidarity with the resilient people of Taiwan. The outpouring of support underscores the importance of global cooperation in times of adversity, reaffirming the bonds of friendship and compassion between nations.
