Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Chief Minister through his advocate Rajib Borpujari, has served a legal notice to the Indian Express for defamatory news articles published on April 2 and April 3.
The notice addresses a particular news item from The Indian Express, which referenced cases involving Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan.
The article highlighted that cases against Himanta Biswa Sarma remained stagnant since 2015. In response, Himanta Biswa Sarma’s legal team refutes the allegations, providing a detailed account of the legal proceedings related to the Sarada Chit Fund Scam case and the Louis Berger case.
They assert that Himanta Biswa Sarma was only a witness in the Sarada Chit Fund Scam case, and no accusations were levelled against him by investigating agencies.
Additionally, they clarify that Himanta Biswa Sarma resigned from the Indian National Congress (INC) and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the conclusion of the investigation phase, dismissing any claims of political influence on the legal process.
Furthermore, the legal notice accuses The Indian Express of malicious intent, alleging that the publication failed to verify facts.
Himanta Biswa Sarma’s legal team contends that the allegations are unfounded, and intended to tarnish his reputation for political gain.
The notice mentioned the detrimental impact of the defamatory news report on Himanta Biswa Sarma’s personal and political life, emphasising the need for corrective action to mitigate the damage caused by the false accusations.
