US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed cautious optimism regarding the Israeli government’s recent announcement to increase aid flow into Gaza. However, he suggested that these measures might fall short of meeting the Biden administration’s expectations for significant improvements in humanitarian conditions within the territory.
Blinken acknowledged that expanding border crossings could potentially enhance assistance to Palestinians affected by the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Yet, he stressed the importance of tangible steps to enhance the protection of civilians and aid workers.
The Secretary of State also called for an independent and transparent investigation into the recent killings of aid workers, following the tragic deaths of seven individuals, including six international volunteers, in Israeli airstrikes on their convoy in Gaza.
While welcoming Israel’s announced steps, Blinken emphasized the need for concrete results in the near future. He highlighted the necessity for improved coordination mechanisms to ensure safe delivery and distribution of aid within Gaza.
Israel’s military has pledged to conduct a prompt investigation into the incident, attributing it to misidentification. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced measures to improve conditions, including the reopening of a key border crossing and facilitating aid shipments.
President Joe Biden reinforced the importance of an immediate ceasefire during a call with Netanyahu, linking future US support for Gaza to Israel’s actions in protecting civilians and aid workers.
Israel’s offensive against Hamas has resulted in significant casualties and displacement in Gaza, drawing international concern over civilian suffering and humanitarian conditions.
