In a recent announcement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), it has been revealed that Saurabh Kumar, currently serving as Bharat’s ambassador to Belgium, has been appointed as Bharat’s next ambassador to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. This appointment comes as part of his concurrent accreditation, meaning he will represent Bharat in both Belgium and Luxembourg. The MEA stated that Kumar is expected to assume his new role shortly.
Diplomatic relations between Bharat and Luxembourg date back to 1947 and have since been marked by warmth and friendship. Both nations share a commitment to democratic values, the Rule of Law, and development, forming the cornerstone of their relationship. The MEA emphasized that there is a high degree of understanding and appreciation of each other’s concerns and interests.
The recent 2nd round of Bharat-Luxembourg Foreign Office Consultations (FoC) held in New Delhi focused on strengthening bilateral ties. Key discussions revolved around the early conclusion of a comprehensive and mutually beneficial Bharat-EU Free Trade Agreement. Additionally, both parties expressed satisfaction with the growing collaboration in the financial sector and explored avenues to expand economic links further.
Various sectors were highlighted for potential cooperation between Bharat and Luxembourg during the consultations. These include finance, steel, space, ICT (Information and Communications Technology), innovation, start-ups, manufacturing, automotive, health, sustainable development, renewable energy, and the fight against climate change. Such dialogues underscore the commitment of both nations to fostering diverse partnerships.
The institutionalization of these consultations stems from the bilateral summit held between the prime ministers of India and Luxembourg in November 2020. This signifies a concerted effort to formalize and enhance diplomatic engagement, ensuring sustained collaboration and progress between the two nations.
