In a recent development, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed the death of three sons of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in a targeted airstrike carried out in the Gaza Strip. The IDF, communicating through X (formerly known as Twitter), asserted that Haniyeh’s sons—Amir, Hazem, and Mohammad—were intercepted while allegedly en route to engage in terror activities in central Gaza.
Ismail Haniyeh, mourned the loss of his sons, portraying them as martyrs on the path to liberating Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He condemned the strike as a vindictive act by the enemy, expressing disbelief that targeting his family would alter Hamas’s stance.
The strike occurred near the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City, Haniyeh’s place of origin. According to IDF sources, Amir Haniyeh held the position of a squad commander within the Hamas military wing, while Hazem and Mohammad were described as lower-ranking operatives.
Contrary to IDF claims, Hamas’ Al-Aqsa TV station reported that the airstrike targeted a vehicle carrying family members, resulting in a total of six casualties, including Haniyeh’s sons and additional relatives.
The incident took place against the backdrop of subdued Eid al-Fitr celebrations in Gaza, where Palestinians remembered loved ones lost during the ongoing conflict. Earlier, US President Joe Biden criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the situation, urging support for the besieged territory.
Efforts are underway to negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, with discussions also focused on the release of hostages held by Hamas and other groups. Gaza’s Health Ministry has reported over 33,400 Palestinian casualties, with the majority being women and children, since the conflict erupted on October 7, 2023.
