Between April and May, over 6,000 Bharatiya workers are expected to arrive in Israel to address the labour shortage in the construction sector, stemming from the Israel-Hamas conflict.
According to a statement issued by Israeli government, ‘They will be transported via an air shuttle, thanks to a collaborative decision by the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, finance ministry, and construction and housing ministry’, according to a statement by the Israeli government. The statement said, ‘These charter flights will be subsidised to welcome their arrival’.
Israel’s construction industry faces a scarcity of local workers in particular fields, prompting the recruitment of foreign labour. Previously, over 80,000 workers came from the Palestinian Authority-controlled West Bank and 17,000 from the Gaza Strip.
Due to the conflict, many had their work permits cancelled in October. The statement further added, ‘This influx of over 6,000 workers marks the largest deployment of foreign labour to Israel’s construction sector within a short timeframe’.
The statement was released after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a meeting at the PMO in Jerusalem amid a shortage of workers that has stalled many projects, causing concerns about the increasing cost of living and also friction between many government bodies and businesses.
Under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement between the countries the workers from Bharat are being brought to Israel.
