In a blow to Rajasthan Royals and their captain Sanju Samson, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed a hefty fine of Rs 12 lakh on Samson for breaching the IPL ‘Code of Conduct’. This penalty came after the team maintained a slow over rate during their match against the Gujarat Titans.
According to an official release from the IPL, it was the first offence of the season for Samson’s team under the IPL’s Code of Conduct related to minimum over rate violations. As a result, Samson has been fined Rs 12 lakh for the infraction.
Despite the setback, Rajasthan Royals managed to hold onto their position at the top of the IPL 2024 points table, despite facing a thrilling defeat against the Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. This loss marked Rajasthan Royals’ first defeat of the season in five games, leaving them with eight points from four wins.
Following Rajasthan’s loss, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) maintain their second-place position in the points table, having secured three wins from four matches. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) occupy the third and fourth spots respectively. Notably, all three teams – KKR, LSG, and CSK – have six points each, with their positions determined by net run rates.
The defeat against the Gujarat Titans also marked the fourth time Rajasthan Royals lost an IPL match on the last ball while defending their target. Despite a strong start by the Titans’ captain Shubman Gill, who scored a 44-ball 72, Rajasthan Royals managed to claw their way back into the game with crucial wickets from Kuldeep Sen and Yuzvendra Chahal.
However, despite the setback, Gujarat Titans managed to secure victory thanks to a late surge from Rashid Khan (24 not out) and Rahul Tewatia (22), who guided the team home on the last delivery of the innings.
The fine imposed on Samson serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to the IPL’s Code of Conduct, emphasizing the need for teams to maintain the required over rate during matches to avoid penalties and uphold the spirit of fair play in the tournament.
