Renowned boxer M C Mary Kom has announced her resignation as the chef-de-mission of Bharat’s Paris Olympics contingent due to personal reasons. The decision was reported by the news agency PTI. Expressing her regret, Kom stated, “Embarrassing to retreat from a commitment, but I am left with no choice.”
In a letter addressed to the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), PT Usha, Kom conveyed her decision to step down from the prestigious role. She emphasized her honor in serving her country in every possible way but cited personal reasons for her resignation.
Kom, a bronze-medalist from the 2012 London Olympics, was appointed as the Chef-de-Mission for Bharat’s contingent at the upcoming Paris Olympics on March 21 by the IOA. Her role was to oversee the logistical aspects of the Indian team during the games scheduled from July 26 to August 11.
Reacting to Kom’s decision, PT Usha, in a statement, expressed sadness over her resignation and stated, “We respect her decision and her privacy.” Usha assured that appropriate consultations would be made to announce a replacement for Kom soon.
Following the receipt of Kom’s resignation letter, Usha had a conversation with the legendary boxer, understanding her request and expressing respect for her decision. She assured Kom of her support and requested everyone to respect the privacy of the acclaimed athlete.
Mary Kom’s resignation from the role of Chef-de-Mission for the Paris Olympics has stirred discussions within the Bharatiya sports community. With her stepping down, the IOA will now focus on appointing a suitable replacement to lead the Indian contingent at the prestigious sporting event.
Despite stepping down from her administrative role, Mary Kom remains dedicated to supporting her country and its athletes at the Paris Olympics. Her decision reflects the challenges individuals face balancing personal commitments with professional responsibilities, even for celebrated athletes like her.
