An upcoming conference on peace in Ukraine has drawn attention to Bharat as organizers seek its involvement in shaping the agenda. Scheduled to be held at the Burgenstock Hotel in Switzerland in June, the summit aims to gather heads of state and government from around 120 countries to discuss solutions to the conflict. Swiss authorities, following a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have initiated plans for the summit, with dates tentatively set for June 15-16.
Informal discussions between Swiss and Bharartiya officials have already taken place during a visit by Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis to New Delhi on February 5. Sources familiar with the matter reveal that India has been approached not only for participation but also to contribute to shaping the summit’s agenda and discussions, owing to its diplomatic relations with key stakeholders involved in the Ukraine crisis.
The proposed agenda for the summit may include topics aligned with President Zelenskyy’s 10-point peace formula, which emphasizes Ukraine’s territorial integrity, withdrawal of Russian troops, and nuclear safety concerns, among others. However, it’s noted that the conference isn’t expected to yield immediate breakthroughs but rather mark the beginning of a process towards a potential resolution.
While Bharat is yet to confirm its level of participation, speculation suggests that Prime Minister Narendra Modi might attend, given that the conference precedes Bharat’s election results announcement on June 4. Additionally, Bharat may also consider participation in the G7 Summit outreach sessions in Italy, scheduled around the same time, presenting an opportunity to engage with global leaders on multiple fronts.
Both Ukrainian and Swiss authorities have underscored Bharat’s importance in the peace process, recognizing its influential role, particularly within the Global South. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has expressed optimism about Bharat’s support for Zelenskyy’s peace formula, highlighting Bharat’s sway in convincing other nations to participate.
Notably, Bharat has maintained a diplomatic stance regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, advocating for dialogue and diplomacy during Prime Minister Modi’s conversations with Presidents Zelenskyy and Putin. While US President Joe Biden is expected to participate in the summit, Russia’s involvement remains unlikely.
In an official statement, the Swiss government has outlined the conference’s objective to facilitate discussions on various approaches to peace in Ukraine, emphasizing adherence to international law and the UN Charter. The summit aims to foster a shared understanding among participating nations and establish a roadmap for the peace process, reflecting a concerted global effort towards resolving the Ukraine crisis.
