Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a fiery speech during an election rally in Rajasthan’s Barmer, dismissed accusations from the Opposition claiming the BJP aimed to dismantle the Constitution. Modi emphasized that his government holds deep respect for the Constitution, asserting that even Babasaheb Ambedkar himself would be unable to abolish it now.
Addressing the crowd, PM Modi countered allegations made by the Congress party, particularly their assertion that the nation’s Constitution and democracy would be jeopardized if he secures a third term in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He accused the Congress of resorting to falsehoods, pointing out their own history of challenging democratic norms.
Modi took aim at the Congress’s past actions, notably referencing the imposition of the emergency in the country, which he deemed as an attempt to undermine the Constitution. He accused the Congress of hypocrisy, criticizing them for using the Constitution as a shield while engaging in practices that undermine its sanctity.
Continuing his assault on the Congress, PM Modi lamented their treatment of Babasaheb Ambedkar, alleging that the party obstructed his recognition during his lifetime and even prevented him from receiving the Bharat Ratna, Bharat’s highest civilian award. He accused the Congress of disrespecting Ambedkar’s legacy and attempting to rewrite history to suit their narrative.
Highlighting his own government’s initiatives, PM Modi emphasized his administration’s efforts to honor Babasaheb Ambedkar’s contributions. He mentioned the establishment of Constitution Day celebrations and the development of pilgrimage sites associated with Ambedkar, positioning himself as a guardian of Ambedkar’s legacy and the Constitution.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come in response to recent statements by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who accused Modi and the BJP of harboring intentions to dismantle Ambedkar’s Constitution. The controversy escalated after BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde suggested the need for a two-thirds majority to amend the Constitution, prompting the BJP to distance itself from his remarks and seek clarification.
Dr. B R Ambedkar, revered as the Chief Architect of the Constitution, remains a central figure in Bharatiya politics, with his legacy often invoked by various political parties to bolster their respective narratives. PM Modi’s staunch defense of the Constitution and his invocation of Ambedkar’s name underscore the intensifying political battle ahead of the forthcoming elections.
