ECI Strikes Back: Debunking Opposition’s Misinformation on EVMs
Recently the Election Commission of India (ECI) has once again faced baseless accusations regarding the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Allegations were made by certain individuals regarding the integrity of the voting process, despite the Supreme Court dismissing such demands previously. The claims were swiftly countered by the ECI, which highlighted the robust security measures in place to safeguard the EVMs.
The ECI clarified that the source code for EVMs is developed in-house by Bharat companies, ensuring complete control over the manufacturing process. Moreover, the EVMs use advanced features like one-time programmable microcontrollers and tamper detection mechanisms, making them highly secure against any attempts at manipulation. Despite these assurances, individual continued his rhetoric, accusing the ECI of malafide intent and even issuing threats of imprisonment.
However, the ECI’s response was firm and backed by legal precedent. The Supreme Court had previously dismissed PILs seeking audits of EVM source code, citing the lack of actionable evidence and the potential vulnerabilities that could arise from such disclosures.
An open threat has been added by the Supreme Court of Bharat that “They must know they will be jailed if they are caught with manipulation of EVMs.” Also, the ECI pointed out that the current system of randomly counting VVPAT slips provides a high level of accuracy, with no discrepancies found in past instances.
The opposition’s persistent doubts about EVMs come at a crucial time, with the Lok Sabha elections looming. Bloomberg columnist added fuel to the fire, advocating for judicial scrutiny of EVMs and raising unfounded concerns about their reliability. However, the arguments were swiftly debunked, with critics highlighting his bias and selective criticism based on political outcomes.
Further, the ECI’s efforts to address these concerns have been met with resistance from opposition parties, who continue to question the legitimacy of the electoral process. Despite clear explanations from the ECI regarding the security measures in place, the opposition persists in spreading misinformation and casting doubt on the electoral system.
Despite facing relentless attacks from the opposition, It is also evident that the ECI remains committed to upholding the integrity of the Electoral process. As the Supreme Court prepares to hear pleas regarding VVPAT verification, the ECI’s steadfast defense of the EVMs serves as a reassuring reminder of the robustness of Bharat’s democratic institutions.
