The Election Commission of India has taken action against Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala. The ECI took legal action against Surjewala for his alleged derogatory remark against BJP MP Hema Malini. He has been barred from campaigning for 48 hours as a consequence of his statement, which stirred controversy during the ongoing election season.
This incident unfolded when a video surfaced on social media, in which Surjewala was heard making disparaging remarks about Hema Malini’s role as an elected representative. He allegedly questioned the purpose of electing MPs and MLAs, suggesting that Hema Malini was elected merely to serve personal interests.
Following the uproar caused by the video, the Election Commission of India issued show cause notices to both Surjewala and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Surjewala defended himself by claiming that the video was doctored and distorted by the BJP to tarnish his image.
However, the Election Commission conducted a thorough investigation into the matter. Based on the evidence provided by the District Election Officer of Kaithal, it was confirmed that Surjewala indeed made the controversial statement during a speech given at Faral village in the Pundri assembly constituency.
As a result, the Election Commission deemed Surjewala’s statement as a violation of the Model Code of Conduct, which mandates respectful conduct during election campaigns. As a disciplinary measure, Surjewala has been prohibited from campaigning for a period of 48 hours.
Thus, the BJP condemned Surjewala’s remark, labeling it as a new low in disrespecting and demeaning the dignity of women. The incident highlights the intense political atmosphere surrounding the elections and the scrutiny faced by candidates for their public statements.
