As the Ram Navami festivities approach, several police stations across West Bengal are on high alert to prevent any potential communal tensions, according to a report by The Indian Express. The Hindu Jagran Manch, affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is set to organize approximately 5,000 religious processions at the ward or panchayat-level in all districts of the state. Additionally, large-scale processions are planned in Barasat, Siliguri, and Kolkata’s Burrabazar.

District administrations in Hooghly, Howrah, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur, Asansol, and Barrackpore, which have previously experienced communal tensions during Ram Navami celebrations, are also on alert, as reported by the newspaper. Police authorities have warned of strict action against anyone found violating law and order, emphasizing a ban on public displays of weapons during processions. Traditional groups and akharas have been granted permission for their processions, which will be videographed.

Ram Navami celebrations in recent years have evolved into political battlegrounds, often escalating into major confrontations and communal riots. Clashes erupted in Howrah on March 30 last year, spreading to North Dinajpur and Hooghly, resulting in ten injuries. Earlier this week, the Calcutta High Court granted permission for Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Anjani Putra Sena processions in Howrah on April 17 under certain conditions, despite the state government’s proposal for an alternative route.

Meanwhile, the Hindu Jagran Manch anticipates the participation of thousands in their Ram Navami processions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining law and order. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing election rallies, applauded the high court’s decision as a “victory for truth,” accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of attempting to obstruct the festivities. In response, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of orchestrating riots ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, urging supporters to remain vigilant and avoid engaging in clashes.
