In a move to uphold the natural splendour of Sikkim’s urban areas, the State Government has issued a directive targeting the rampant issue of cable clutter within townscapes. The Urban Development Department, operating under the Sikkim Government, has released a public notice denouncing the unauthorised use of flower pot stands as makeshift supports for utility service wires.
Dated April 22, the UDD secretary shows the government’s commitment to town beautification efforts, emphasising the adornment of public spaces with flowers and decorative elements. However, recent observations reveal a troubling trend where cables and utility wires are indiscriminately strung or tied onto flower pot stands along highways and various other locations.
Expressing grave concern, the government highlights the unsuitability of flower pot stands to bear the weight and strain of utility wires. This unauthorised practice not only compromises the structural integrity of beautification efforts but also detracts from the aesthetic charm of urban landscapes.
Stakeholders, including service providers, cable operators, consumers, and individuals, have been issued a stern warning to remove any cables or utility wires from flower pot stands promptly. Failure to comply will result in stringent actions by the department and Urban Local Bodies, with defaulters facing punitive measures, including the removal of cables at their own expense. The incurred expenditure will be recovered from the concerned service providers, operators, and individuals.
