Additional Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar, known for his recent actions in high-profile cases, has approached the police for assistance following a series of alarming incidents. Justice Diwakar, who gained attention for ordering a videographic survey of Varanasi’s Gyanvapi Mosque complex last year, reported receiving menacing calls and death threats from international numbers.
In a letter addressed to the Bareilly Superintendent of Police, he detailed receiving one such call on April 15, which included a death threat, followed by another similar call in subsequent days.
Justice Diwakar, who was recently transferred to Bareilly, has been conversational about previous threats directed towards him and his family. The situation escalated after his involvement in the 2018 Bareilly riots case, where he initiated suo motu action.
His decision to order Maulana Tauqeer Raza to stand trial as the alleged mastermind behind the riots, which caused significant property damage and a prolonged curfew in Bareilly, attracted further attention and controversy.
The judge’s troubles began to mount following his directive for a video survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque and the sealing of its ablution area. These actions stirred tensions and led to a heightened security threat against him.
Despite the Allahabad High Court initially granting Y-category security for Justice Diwakar and his family, this protection was later downgraded to X category, leaving him with only two security personnel.
Concerns have been raised regarding the adequacy of Justice Diwakar’s current security detail, as his colleagues note that neither of the assigned personnel is equipped with weapons. This has led to fears about the judge’s safety, especially in light of the persistent threats he has been facing.
Responding to these developments, Justice Diwakar has urged authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure his and his family’s safety. The community and legal fraternity are closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing the significance of protecting judicial officials from intimidation and harm in the discharge of their duties.
