IndiGo, Bharat’s top airline, has set its sights on the long-haul market with a fresh deal with Airbus. On Thursday, the Bharatiya Airline announced its plan to acquire 30 Airbus A350-900 widebody aircraft, with deliveries set to begin in 2027.
This strategic move aims at expanding IndiGo’s reach into the long-haul segment, marking a significant development for the airline.
The announcement also revealed that IndiGo holds purchase rights for an additional 70 Airbus A350 family aircraft. This not only underscores the airline’s commitment to growth but also reflects its confidence in Airbus as a key partner in its expansion plans.
IndiGo, known for its massive fleet, currently operates over 350 aircraft. In June 2023, the airline made headlines with the largest single aircraft order in history, securing 500 aircraft from Airbus. With this latest procurement, IndiGo’s outstanding order book now approaches nearly 1,000 aircraft, solidifying its position as a major player in the aviation industry.
The diversified fleet strategy of IndiGo is evident in its order book, which includes various models from the A320 Family alongside the newly acquired A350-900s. This comprehensive approach allows the airline to cater to different market segments, ensuring flexibility and adaptability in its operations.
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, expressed excitement about the milestone, stating, “Today’s historic moment marks a new chapter for IndiGo and will further shape the future of the airline and for Indian aviation at the same time.”
He emphasized the significance of the A350-900 fleet in propelling IndiGo towards its goal of becoming a global aviation leader.
Elbers highlighted IndiGo’s commitment to India’s growth and its strategic partnership with Airbus. He underscored the airline’s dedication to offering connectivity and convenience to customers, both within Bharat and beyond its borders.
The acquisition of 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft represents a bold step forward for IndiGo, signaling its ambition to compete on the international stage. With its extensive fleet and strategic vision, IndiGo is poised to continue its trajectory of success in the dynamic aviation industry.
