Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for an attack on the MSC Orion container ship in the Indian Ocean. The assault is part of their ongoing efforts to target international shipping, in solidarity with Palestinians amid the conflict with Israel in Gaza.
The Portugal-flagged MSC Orion, owned by Zodiac Maritime, was en route between Sines, Portugal, and Salalah, Oman, when it was attacked. Zodiac Maritime, linked to Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer, has not yet commented on the incident.
This latest attack adds to a series of drone and missile strikes by the Houthis in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden since November. These attacks have led to disruptions in shipping routes, forcing vessels to take longer and costlier detours around Southern Africa. The Houthis have expressed intentions to expand their target area, particularly focusing on ships with ties to Israel.
Recent attacks have included the targeting of the Cyclades commercial vessel and two U.S. destroyers. In response, the United States and Britain have conducted strikes against Houthi targets.
