Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, has been fined $9,000 by Justice Juan Merchan for violating a gag order in his criminal hush money trial. The trial, currently ongoing in New York, centers around allegations that Trump sought to cover up a sexual encounter with porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election campaign.
Trump, who is also the Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election, faces charges of falsifying business records related to a $130,000 payment made to Daniels in exchange for her silence about the alleged encounter.
Despite pleading not guilty, Trump has denied any sexual involvement with Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.
The trial, which began on April 22, is a historic event as it marks the first time a former U.S. president has faced criminal charges in court. As proceedings resumed with testimony from a banker familiar with the financial transactions involved in the case, Trump found himself facing the consequences of breaching the court’s orders.
Outside the courthouse, a group of approximately two dozen Trump supporters gathered, chanting his name and displaying banners reading “TRUMP 24”. This demonstration was organized by a local Republican organization in response to Trump’s complaints about the lack of public support for him during the trial.
Among the witnesses called to testify was banker Garry Farro, who provided insights into the financial records linked to Trump’s former lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen. Prosecutors allege that Cohen played a key role in facilitating the hush money payment to Daniels on Trump’s behalf.
Despite the legal proceedings, Trump’s focus remains on his political ambitions, as he prepares for a potential rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden in the upcoming November 5 election. However, Trump is required to attend the trial, even as he considers prioritizing his campaign activities.
While this trial is just one of four legal cases pending against Trump, it holds significant implications, as it could be the only one to reach a verdict before the election. As the proceedings continue, the eyes of the country remain fixed on the outcome of this landmark trial involving a former U.S. president.
