Situated approximately 50 km from Kokrajhar town in Assam’s Kokrajhar district, Mainaguri village has undergone a profound transformation, evolving from a region plagued by militancy to a flourishing hub of weavers. Nestled near the Indo-Bhutan border, the village now stands as a testament to resilience and progress, earning the moniker of ‘Weavers Village.’
Home to 66 families primarily belonging to the Rabha tribe community, Mainaguri has experienced significant changes in recent years. Once grappling with the challenges of militancy, the village has embraced a newfound era of development and economic prosperity through concerted efforts and initiatives.
Elisha Rabha, a resident, expressed the village’s positive transition, stated, “Earlier, there was this (militancy problem), but now we are living in a peaceful environment and we are happy. The income has also increased.” This sentiment reflects the village’s journey from turmoil to tranquillity, showcasing the resilience of its inhabitants.
The burgeoning weaving industry not only provides sustainable livelihoods but also serves as a testament to the rich cultural heritage and artisanal craftsmanship of the Rabha tribe and Assam.
Mainaguri’s success story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, not only for the local community but also for conflict-affected regions across Assam.
