The day marks the birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap who was a Rajput monarch known for his bravery. Maharana Pratap was born on May 9, 1540. His opposition to Akbar and the story of his faithful horse, Chetak, are well-known.
Maharana Pratap bravely opposed the Mughal Empire when others had admitted Akbar’s supremacy. A member of the Rajput clan from the Sisodia dynasty, Maharana Pratap was a Hindu monarch.
He hailed from Rajasthan and his father was Maharana Udai Singh II, the reigning monarch of Mewar. Maharana Pratap was the eldest of 25 siblings and held the title of Crown Prince. He ascended to the Mewar throne following the death of his father.
He is considered a great patriot, who started the country’s first fight for independence. The Battle of Haldighati was fought between Maharana Pratap, the King of Mewar and the forces of Akbar led by Rajput king Raja Mansingh. After the loss at Haldighati, Maharana Patap and his followers went to the hills and forests of the Aravali range, where they continued their resistance against the Mughals. Pratap lived a life of exile for years facing many hardships but never compromised on his principles.
Maharana Pratap severely wounded his enemies and won great respect and admiration for his bravery. On the third day of the Jyeshtha Shukla phase, which is the third month of the Hindu calendar his birth anniversary is observed as Maharana Pratap Jayanti every year.
