Bharat has stepped forward with a gesture of solidarity, dispatching 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Kenya in the wake of devastating floods that have wreaked havoc in the African country. The catastrophe has claimed the lives of 267 people and left over 280,000 displaced from their homes.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced the dispatch of this second tranche of relief materials to Kenya. The aid package includes vital supplies such as medicines, medical equipment, and other essentials aimed at assisting those affected by the floods.

Jaishankar emphasized the historical partnership between India and Kenya, portraying India as a global friend (‘Vishwabandhu’) in times of crisis.
The Bharatiya government’s response to the disaster underscores its commitment to extending a helping hand to Kenya during these trying times. The floods have swept through 38 out of Kenya’s 47 counties, leaving a trail of destruction and causing injuries to 188 individuals.
A significant portion of the relief consignment, airlifted by an Indian Air Force aircraft, comprises 22 tonnes of essential relief materials including tents, blankets, sleeping bags, power generation sets, and ready-to-eat meals. These items are crucial for providing immediate shelter and sustenance to the affected population.
Furthermore, the aid package includes 18 tonnes of medical supplies, encompassing life-saving drugs, surgical equipment, and other medical necessities required for critical care and wound management.

In addition, provisions for baby food, water purification, menstrual hygiene, and disease prevention are included, demonstrating Bharat’s comprehensive approach to addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by the disaster.
The Indian Navy has also contributed to relief efforts by dispatching INS Sumedha, which arrived in Mombasa on May 10. The naval vessel is equipped to provide immediate assistance, delivering essential relief materials and medical supplies to affected areas.
Bharat’s assistance to Kenya exemplifies the strong and friendly relations between the two nations, reaffirming Bharat’s commitment to prioritizing Africa in its foreign policy agenda. This humanitarian gesture is framed within the spirit of South-South cooperation, reflecting Bharat’s dedication to supporting fellow developing countries during times of crisis.
