Amidst escalating protests in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), Bharat’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, reaffirmed Bharat’s stance, asserting that PoK has always been and will remain an integral part of Bharat.
Speaking at the ‘Why Bharat Matters’ event in Kolkata, Jaishankar emphasized the stark developmental disparities between PoK and Jammu and Kashmir, indicating the progress achieved in the latter region.

Jaishankar highlighted the burgeoning unrest in PoK, acknowledging the visible discontent expressed through social media and televised demonstrations. He underscored the complexity of analyzing the situation, suggesting that residents of PoK inevitably compare their circumstances to those in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly noting the pervasive sense of being under occupation and discrimination.
In response to inquiries regarding the potential merger of PoK with Bharat, Jaishankar redirected the focus, reiterating Bharat’s historical claim over the region. He elucidated that with the abrogation of Article 370, there’s a heightened awareness within Bharat regarding its past errors and a concerted effort to rectify them.
The recent protests in PoK turned violent when Pakistan Paramilitary rangers, deployed in the region, opened fire on demonstrators, resulting in casualties and numerous injuries.
The protests, sparked by grievances against taxes on electricity bills, subsidy cuts, and demands to curtail the privileges of the Prime Minister and President, underscored the simmering discontent among the locals.
The incident drew attention to the plight of PoK residents and reignited discussions about the region’s political status. Bharat’s firm assertion of sovereignty over PoK amidst the turmoil signals a continuation of its longstanding policy regarding the disputed territory.
