This Day in History | “Victory to India” – said PM Modi after BJP came to power on May 16, 2014

On May 16, 1996, Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the 10th Prime Minister of India. In the 1996 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP emerged as the largest party, but his government fell within 13 days, marking the shortest tenure of any Indian Prime Minister. Vajpayee became Prime Minister again in 1998, but this tenure lasted only 13 months. After mid-term elections, the NDA won 303 seats, and Vajpayee took office for the third time on October 13, 1999. He became the first non-Congress leader since Jawaharlal Nehru to be elected Prime Minister in three consecutive elections. Vajpayee, who started his political career in 1942, was pivotal in founding the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. His tenure was marked by significant events such as the Kargil War, the Pokhran nuclear tests, the Golden Quadrilateral highway project, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, and the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. He is also remembered for his impactful speech in Hindi at the United Nations General Assembly. Vajpayee's influence on Indian politics remains enduring and profound.

On May 16, 2014, when BJP got majority for the first time, Narendra Modi had tweeted, “Victory to India. Good days are coming.” The results of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections were historic in many ways. After 30 years of 1984, a political party came to power with absolute majority on its own. On the other hand, the Congress, which ruled the country for 10 years under the leadership of Manmohan Singh and ruled the country for the longest period, was reduced to just 44 seats with its worst defeat. From then till now the BJP government is in the center. The decision whether the public will once again give a chance to BJP in the Lok Sabha elections 2024 or not will be decided after the results on June 4, 2024.
