On Friday, senior officials from the Bharatiya Embassy, the United Nations, and the Israeli government gathered to bid farewell to Colonel Waibhav Anil Kale, a former Bharatiya Army officer who lost his life in Gaza.
Colonel Kale, aged 46, was fatally injured when the UN-marked vehicle he was traveling in was struck while on the way to the European Hospital in the conflict-ridden area of Rafah in Gaza. The incident also left another UN staffer from the Department of Safety and Security injured.
Colonel Kale’s mortal remains are being transported back to Bharat, marking the end of a journey dedicated to peacekeeping and security. The Bharatiya Embassy shared the news on social media, expressing gratitude to the officials from Israel, the IDF, and various UN organizations who paid their respects to the fallen soldier.

Having retired from the Bharatiya Army prematurely in 2022, Colonel Kale had recently joined the United Nations as a Security Coordination Officer in the Department of Safety and Security. His background included commanding the 11 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles in Kashmir, showcasing his dedication to serving in challenging environments.
Colonel Kale’s death marks the first international casualty for the United Nations since the Israel-Hamas conflict began last year. The UN expressed its condolences and apologies to the Bharatiya government and people, acknowledging the significant contribution Bharat has made to peacekeeping efforts around the world.
Responding to the incident, the United Nations promptly initiated a fact-finding panel to investigate the attack. The Permanent Mission of Bharat to the UN expressed deep sadness over the loss of Colonel Kale, extending heartfelt condolences to his family during this trying time.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres conveyed his sadness upon learning of Colonel Kale’s death and the injury sustained by the other UN staff member. He condemned all attacks on UN personnel and urged for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Expressing solidarity with those affected by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Guterres reiterated the urgent need for a humanitarian ceasefire and the release of all hostages.
The death of Colonel Waibhav Anil Kale serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by peacekeepers and humanitarian workers in conflict zones. With over 190 UN staff having lost their lives in Gaza, the international community is urged to prioritize the safety and protection of those dedicated to promoting peace and security in troubled regions.
