On Saturday, a delegation of foreign diplomats, including Singapore High Commissioner to Bharat Simon Wong and Nepal’s Ambassador to India Shankar P Sharma, joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public meeting in North East Delhi.
The gathering aimed to observe the political atmosphere ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The upcoming general elections in Delhi will see all seven Lok Sabha seats contested in a single phase on May 25. Among the key contests is the battle for the North East Delhi Lok Sabha seat, where BJP’s Manoj Tiwari is facing off against Congress candidate Kanhaiya Kumar.
Ambassador Sharma, speaking to ANI, highlighted the significance of the diplomatic delegation’s presence, noting that about 20 dignitaries, including six ambassadors, were keen to witness the rally. He emphasized the similarity between political rallies in Delhi and those in Nepal, expressing a desire for a firsthand experience of Prime Minister Modi’s address.
Sharma commended Bharat as the “largest democracy” in the world, lauding the ongoing electoral process. He remarked on the completion of certain phases of the elections, underscoring the pride in India’s democratic tradition.
The Lok Sabha elections of 2024 are underway in seven phases, spanning from April 19 to June 1. The fourth phase, conducted on May 7, witnessed voting in 96 constituencies across several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Jammu and Kashmir.
The Election Commission reported a voter turnout of 69.16% in the fourth phase, with substantial participation from men, women, and third-gender individuals.
However, the Commission clarified that the final turnout would only be available post-counting, including the addition of postal ballots from service voters, absentee voters, and those on election duty.
Looking ahead, the fifth phase of polling is scheduled for May 20, with detailed parliamentary constituency-wise information provided by the Election Commission. The culmination of the seven-phase election process will culminate on June 4, with the announcement of results shaping the future political landscape of India.
