Bharatiya filmmaker Chidananda S Naik has clinched the prestigious first prize at the renowned Cannes Film Festival for Best Short Film. His captivating creation, titled ‘Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know,’ swept the competition, standing out among 17 other remarkable entries. The competition was fierce, with a total of 2,263 submissions from 555 film schools globally.

Naik, a student at the esteemed Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), crafted a compelling 16-minute narrative that revolves around a small village plunged into turmoil by the theft of a rooster by an elderly woman.

The ensuing chaos prompts the invocation of a prophecy, leading to the exile of the woman’s family in a bid to retrieve the stolen rooster.

The announcement of the La Cinef awards, which took place on May 23 at the Bunuel Theatre, was met with great anticipation and excitement. Naik’s win not only highlights his talent but also underscores the growing recognition of Bharatiya cinema on the global stage.

UK-Based Bharatiya Filmmaker Mansi Maheshwari Secures Third Prize

Adding to the accolades for Bharatiya talent, Mansi Maheshwari, hailing from Meerut, secured the third prize in the same category at Cannes with her film ‘Bunnyhood.’ Despite being a UK production, ‘Bunnyhood’ is a testament to Maheshwari’s roots and showcases her creative prowess as a filmmaker.

Cannes Awards Recognize Global Talent

The Cannes Film Festival, renowned for celebrating cinematic excellence, awarded a grant of 15,000 euros to Naik for the first prize, with the second and third prizes receiving 11,250 euros and 7,500 euros, respectively.

The second prize was shared by Columbia University’s ‘Our The Window Through The Wall’ by Asya Segalovich and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki’s ‘The Chaos She Left Behind’ by Nikos Kolioukos.

The esteemed jury for the Short Films and La Cinef category, chaired by Lubna Azabal and featuring esteemed members such as Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar, Paolo Moretti, Claudine Nougaret, and Vladimir Perisic, meticulously evaluated each entry before reaching their decision.

Following the award ceremony, the honored films are set to be screened again at the Cinema du Pantheon on June 3 and at the MK2 Quai de Seine on June 4, providing audiences with another opportunity to experience the exceptional storytelling and cinematic brilliance showcased at Cannes 2024.
