On May 28, 1883, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, also known as Veer Savarkar, was born in Maharashtra. He is credited with developing ‘Hindutva,’ the political ideology of Hindu nationalism. Savarkar defined Hindutva as the identity of those whose fatherland, motherland, and virtuous land are all in India. His strong views on Hindutva often stirred controversy. In 1909, after Savarkar’s brother Ganesh Damodar Savarkar was sentenced to Kala Pani, his associates retaliated by killing AMT Jackson, the District Magistrate of Nashik. Letters from Savarkar were found with those arrested for the murder, implicating him despite his absence from India. On June 29, 1910, the British Secretary of State arranged for a special ship to bring Savarkar back to India. On July 6, 1910, while the ship was docked in France, Savarkar attempted an escape by swimming to shore but was recaptured. Convicted on December 24, 1910, Savarkar received two life sentences, totaling 50 years. He was imprisoned in the Andaman Cellular Jail on July 4, 1911, enduring severe hardships that only strengthened his resolve, earning him the title Veer Savarkar. After India’s independence in 1937, Savarkar became President of the Hindu Mahasabha. He was later implicated in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948, but was acquitted due to insufficient evidence. Savarkar’s revolutionary contributions to India’s freedom struggle are unforgettable. He passed away on February 26, 1966, in Mumbai.
